Social Media and particularly Twitter shifts the paradigm of business marketing from advertising (broadcasting) to information sharing (communicating).
Twitter can be a very flexible publishing medium to satisfy demand. It is different from a webpage or blog - they are longer and more wordy.
Tweets are concise at 140 characters so you can quickly share information. When someone feels they have gained from a tweet they see they typically follow you.
This means that they are likely to see information they weren't looking for but might still be relevant to their own lives.
If they like your tweets they are likely to retweet your message to their friends.
